IL COUNSELING 

Counseling is a discipline officially born in the 1930s in the United States, but it has existed since biblical times, even before Psychology, in fact the Bible refers to "Counselor's" in over 50 verses. Psychotherapist Carl Ransom Rogers, father of Humanistic Psychology and official founder of Counseling and client-centered therapy. He also studied theology at the New York Thoelogical Seminary in the 1920s. He had found a way to combine his faith with psychotherapy.

What is the difference between a counselor therapist, a psychotherapist and a psychologist?


They deal with different aspects of the human being. Due to lack of information almost all of us tend to say

“the psychologist”, enclosing many different professions in a single pot! When you say "the psychologist", you should specify what type of psychologist, know specifically the problem for which you go to the psychologist. What he does or doesn't do, what he says, what I can talk about with the professional, in what aspect of my life he can be useful to me in order to define his area of work.


Many times due to Taboos even though we know well what type of specialist he is; we prefer to enclose it in "psychologist", for fear of other people's judgments. COUNSELING IN ITALY

    In Italy the first degree courses in psychology were officially created in the summer of 1971 in Rome.


    In Italy, activities similar to counseling can be traced in the history of social assistance which began around the 1920s, such welfare initiatives, formally established in 1929. Counseling had a purely philanthropic and voluntary character. The first attestation of the use of the term counseling to indicate an activity aimed at social or psychological problems dates back to 1908 by Frank Parsons in 1951 the word Counseling was used by Carl Rogers The real birth of social work in Italy takes place in the years 1946-48 after the Second World War to deal with the situation of enormous social and economic degradation in the country.


In the United States in the 1900s, some social workers adopted the term counseling to define the professional orientation activity aimed at soldiers returning from war and in need of professional relocation.

HOW DOES IT WORK. COUNSELING

Each Counseling meeting takes 50 minutes.

This type of therapy is done in a cycle of 12 to 14 meetings. On a weekly basis.


The client and the Counselor will work together on a specific discomfort. Sometimes the customer may have found his solution even in fewer meetings. It is called "brief therapy" precisely because it is able to help the client in very few meetings.

Can I see my counselor again to resolve other issues?

Nothing prevents you from returning to your trusted counselor at a later time for other supports that you deem necessary to improve your well-being or to achieve greater self-awareness and thus keep your mental health in good condition.

The profession of psychotherapist

THE PSYCHOLOGIST

A brief history about Counseling:

How was modern Professional Counseling born?


Since biblical times the counselor was the king's advisor. The first advisor named in the Bible was Ahithophel Gilonita, he was King David's Counselor, his task was to help the king to reflect and make wise decisions even in the most difficult moments. This was around 1000-961 BC.



In tribal times people found comfort by sharing their problems or telling their story

to others, it was said "a problem shared is a problem solved". As we get to modern times, religions offered a type of counseling, priests listened and gave advice to solve the problem “they still do it”


In 1890 the German neurologist Sigmund Freud had developed a theory that was called "psychoanalysis", which allowed individuals to talk about their problems to the psychoanalyst, who was trained to interpret the subconscious, the part of the brain that we do not perceive (and which is able to influence what we do)


In 1960 we started talking about counseling. The three disciplines that form counseling are: psychoanalysis, behavioral and humanistic. Since 1950, research has been done to understand why we behave or think a certain way.


The counseling profession began in the 1900s, when doctors and psychoanalysts tried to understand the cause of depression, low mood and how to treat it.

    1886 Freud begins his practice in Vienna 1951 Rogers with his book “Client-Centered Therapy” 1951 Perls, Paul Goodman, and Ralph Hefferline with Gestalt 1954 Maslow helped found humanistic psychology and shortly thereafter developed the hierarchy of needs. 1959 A. According to Plato, the first psychologist may have been Antiphon, a Greek philosopher and orator born in Athens in 480 BC. He established a clinic in Corinth dedicated to verbal therapy.


Physiologist W. Wundt founded psychology as an academic discipline

    In 1879 Wilhelm Wundt opened the first experimental psychology laboratory at Leipzig University in Germany. Stanley Hall was among the students. 1883 Stanley Hall, Wundt's former student, opened the first psychology laboratory at Saint John's University in the United States of America. 1886 Joseph Stanley's student Jastrow was the first person to receive a doctorate in psychology.
